City of Knoxville Staff Prepares for Emergency Events
Colin Ickes
Knoxville Emergency Management Agency Operations Officer Colin Ickes talks to members of Mayor Rogero's administration about the City's emergency response plans. The staff saw presentations on how the City would respond in the event of a disaster. Ickes said that all emergencies are local as the Federal government expects each City to be self-supportive for 72 hours in the aftermath of a disaster.

City Announces New Programs for Neighborhoods
The City of Knoxville today announced several new initiatives in support of Knoxville's neighborhoods. First, the Office of Neighborhoods this spring will launch "Building Strong Neighborhood Organizations" - a program of workshops and seminars on how to start and operate a successful and effective resident-led community organization.

City Seeks to Increase Business with Minority-Owned Firms
The City of Knoxville released two reports during its Council meeting Tuesday night that address its goal of conducting 10% of all business with minority- and women-owned firms.

Additional Recycling Carts Get Delivered
Household Curbside Recycling ProgramA second round of recycling carts will be delivered throughout the month of February for the City's new curbside single-stream program. Households who signed up between Aug. 14 and Dec. 27, 2011, will get their carts this month with the pickup service starting on March 12, 2012.

Resurfacing of Cherokee Boulevard Begins Feb. 20
On Monday, Feb. 20, the City of Knoxville will begin resurfacing Cherokee Boulevard in the Sequoyah Hills neighborhood, from Kingston Pike to Kenesaw Avenue.

KUB Construction Extends Third Creek Greenway/Tyson Park Closures and Detours
KUBOngoing KUB construction activities will extend the closures and detours along sections of the Third Creek Greenway route through portions of the University of Tennessee Agriculture campus, alongside the UT Rugby Field, and intermittently in Tyson Park until mid-April 2012.

City Accepting Agency Grant Applications
The City of Knoxville is currently accepting applications from non-profit organizations interested in obtaining a City Community Agency Grant for fiscal year 2012-2013, which begins on July 1, 2012. The deadline for filing an application is 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 1, 2012.

City Takes Proactive Steps Against Illegal Dump Site
After issuing several zoning violations and stop-work orders, the City of Knoxville has taken additional proactive steps against Greenphalt Recycling - including the posting of signs at the company's two sites. Public Service Department crews posted notices that Greenphalt has not been permitted for the disposal of solid waste by the State of Tennessee or any other regulating authority.

February Sweeps in Brush Collection Season
Click Here for Brush Pickup ScheduleWith the beginning of February comes the start of Brush Collection season for Knoxville residents - just in time to prepare yards for the spring. The Public Service Department announced that City crews will begin collecting brush and other household yard waste from Feb. 1st until Oct. 31st.
