About the Knoxville Fire Dept.

The City of Knoxville Fire Department provides fire protection and rescue services to nearly 100 square miles within the corporate limits of the City of Knoxville serving approximately 175,000 citizens. In addition, the department has the responsibility of enforcement of the fire and life safety codes and public fire education programs.

The Fire Department responded to 30,455 calls for service in 2002. Emergency Medical Service calls for service totaled 10,515, and non-EMS calls for service totaled 19,940. Total emergency runs were 15,581. EMS runs made up 52.7 percent of the total.

The department has 308 full-time career professional firefighters staffing 42 fire suppression and rescue units in the city's 18 fire stations. The stations are located strategically throughout the city. The stations are manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These professionals are also assigned to other divisions within the department such as Training, Fire Prevention Bureau, Public Education, Emergency Medical Services, Administrative Offices, Logistics, and Maintenance Shop.

Firefighter to be Honored
August 9, 2010 - On Tuesday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. during the City Council meeting, Master firefighter Jeff Nichols will be honored by Mayor Bill Haslam and City Council. Nichols is being honored for his heroic actions taken on July 18, 2010. On the morning of July 18 at 6:30 a.m., Master firefighter Jeff Nichols was on his way to work. As he exited from I-275 at Eleventh St. he noticed smoke filling the air ahead of him as he sat waiting for the traffic light to change.

KFD Holds Memorial Service for Fallen Firefighters
KFD Memorial Service
October 6, 2009 - The Knoxville Fire Department held its annual Memorial Service Honoring Fallen Firefighters Tuesday at the KFD's Headquarters Fire Station in downtown Knoxville. The annual ceremony honored the 24 KFD firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty since 1885 and the 7 retired firefighters who have died since the last memorial service. As part of the ceremony, attended by 150-180 active and retired firefighters and family and friends of those being honored, a bell tolled 31 times - once for each of the firefighters. At the same time - as each firefighter's name was read by Fire Chief Stan Sharp and the bell tolled - a single red rose was placed into a gold-colored vase bearing the department's insignia.

New Fire Chief Sworn In
New Fire Chief Sworn InSeptember 8, 2009 - Fire Chief Stan Sharp was ceremonially sworn in as the new chief of the Knoxville Fire Department at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8 in the Main Assembly Room in the City County Building.

Chief Sharp was joined by Mayor Bill Haslam and City Council and was sworn in by Knoxville Municipal Court Judge John R. Rosson, Jr.
New Fire Chief Announced
Mayor Haslam congratulates Fire Chief SharpAugust 18, 2009 - Mayor announced that he has appointed Stan Sharp as the new chief of the Knoxville Fire Department. Sharp, an assistant fire chief who currently serves as the KFD’s safety officer will begin his new duties on September 1. He replaces KFD Chief Robert Key who is retiring on that date. He had served as the chief since 2006. “I’m excited about Stan becoming our fire chief,” Haslam said. “Stan has the right mix of intelligence, work ethic, character and leadership skills to effectively lead the department through the coming years.”
