A nine-member board of commissioners governs the MKAA. The board is appointed by the mayor and confirmed by City Council. Members of the Airport Authority Board of Commissioners include Kirk Huddleston (chair), Fred Forster (vice chairman), Henrietta Grant, Jeff W. Smith, J. Randal Greaves, Earl Taylor, Kathleen Finch, Howard Vogel, and Jeffrey L. Cornish. McGhee Tyson Airport is the premier airport in East Tennessee, a facility with more than 2,000 acres that serves the commercial airline industry, air cargo, military aviation and general aviation. It is located on Alcoa Highway (State Highway 129), 12 miles south of downtown Knoxville. MKAA also operates the Downtown Island Airport, a 150 acre general aviation facility less than three miles from downtown Knoxville. It is home to more than 100 private and corporate aircraft.
