Knoxville Police Department Uniform History

Full length "Prince Albert" Coat, with Double row of Brass Buttons was introduced in 1854 and worn until 1910.

1920's Officers began wearing  long Hip Length Coats with a single row of brass buttons.
Hip length single brass button coat worn with regular Cross over "Sam Brown" leather gear. Also worn was the 5 point Hat. A change in policy allowed the officer to wear gun on the outside of his uniform. In the 1960's Officers were no longer required to wear coats as in the past. The shirts were gray with dark Epaulettes and pocket flaps. This design was worn until 1971.
1960- 1971 Female Officer's uniform of the day was a skirt. Officer seen here with white "WAVE" head cover. June 1, 1972 all officers except the Chief and Assistant Chiefs went to the same style of navy blue uniform: Five star hat, shirt, and pants. Female officers stopped wearing the White "WAVE" hat in 1974.
