The objective is to recycle batteries in support of the city’s goal of reducing landfill solid waste by 30% and being an environmental leader. To dispose of leaking or large batteries and tools with built-in batteries, call the Solid Waste Management Facility, Household Hazardous Waste Center 215-6700. The facility is located at 1033 Elm St. off of the I-275 W. Baxter Av. exit. Vehicle-type and garden tractor lead-acid batteries should be traded in when purchasing new batteries. Batteries that are not traded may be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste collection center. The Household Hazardous Waste collection center then sorts batteries by type. Batteries such as cell phone batteries are recycled into new batteries. Others are utilized for their metal content. During the first 3 months of the program 1,440 pounds of batteries were collected at the six supercenters. That's approximately 19,000 batteries diverted from our landfills. Types of batteries collected at the Recycling Supercenters are watch and calculator button batteries, and Ni-Cad - cell phone or walkie-talkie radio batteries. We are unable to accept the following used batteries: 6 Volt Lantern Type D and C Cell AA and AAA These can be disposed of in the regular trash.
